Enjoy some mild excerpts from the collection:
“Ignore this place. Ignore everything around you, just look at me. What I do affords me the ability to surround myself with items that comfort me. They are just things that can be taken away or replaced.” Gesturing to her then back to himself, he laid his palm to his chest. “This is real, Avelina. I’m real. This is my home and it feels very right for you to be standing in it.”
Their eyes remained locked. Heart melting in her chest, she battled with the urge to throw herself in his arms, to sink into his strength and allow him to be in charge of slaying her dragons. Could she simply throw away all the baggage of doubt and fear that he would take her heart into his large palm resting on his chest and crush it to dust? She was all too familiar with that feeling. That was her reality. This was an unknown. The disgust, yet comfort of the familiar fear won out.
“I’m seeing someone,” she blurted, immediately regretting reverting to her usual defense by building walls that existed only in her mind. She immediately hated that she had caused his eyes to shift from glowing warmth to a steely glint and his hand to drop from his heart to his side.
“Is this the same someone that keeps trying to change you, Avelina?”
Chin raised, she stared him directly in the eye. “His name is Travis. I’ve been seeing him for five months. I really shouldn’t be here. I don’t know what I was thinking. It’s not fair to him…or to you.” Even as she spoke the words, she felt humiliated that he’d remembered her little rant at the club.
“Are you in love with him?”
She knew immediately that her face had given her away when one eyebrow rose and his lips twisted into a delicious smirk. She wanted to be angry, to lash out at him, if only to make herself feel better. But she couldn’t find it within her to act on that thought, so remained quiet, challenging him with her eyes.
“Do not lie to me, Avelina. You cannot possibly love a man that so easily overlooks the core of your essence, to attempt to form you into a woman of his imagination. Perhaps I should have asked a different question. Are you lovers?”
Unlike Marcus, Severus appeared innately honorable. This crazy, excruciatingly beautiful man was in her home, sitting on her couch, and sharing a few minutes of his life. Well, she hoped her perceptions were still somewhat reliable. She didn’t think she was imagining the contained anger as Marcus acted the fool. Severus could have stayed in the house and kept out of it, but he was a protector by profession. That was just the way he rolled, and she just happened to be the one in his path at the moment. He was completely out of her league. She didn’t delude herself to that fact. She would never dare to bring her benched heart out to play in the big leagues. He would slice and dice it like a sous chef just by kindly turning her away.
God help her if he ever showed the slightest bit of interest because she knew for a fact she would be pulled into the masculine suck-zone spiraling around his body. She’d be snapped into the vortex and spit out the other side, just as inept at stopping the inevitable as her mom. When his eyes flipped up to hers, she held his gaze for a few beats before deciding she needed to get him focused on something else besides her startled face.
“Hey, you gonna sit there all night or do I have to start flipping through the big book for Plumbers ‘R’ Us?” At his bark of laughter, she grinned as wide as she could and tore her eyes away from his. Plopping down next to the broken appliance, she crossed her legs and picked up several of his tools. “Just tell me what you need and I’ll assist.”
She tried not to watch him pull that big body up from the couch or his graceful approach, but she just couldn’t seem to tear her eyes away. The bunching muscles in his forearms as he pushed from the couch, wide shoulders blocking the view of the living room, faded jeans hanging low on narrow hips, and the flexing of prominent thigh muscles as he knelt beside her left her breathless. His deep, sexy voice only added to her heart palpitations.
“Hand me the wrench. I need to loosen the spray arm to get a look inside.”
When he started twisting the bolts, her glass of water became her best friend or she would have done something stupid like squeezing his bicep to see if it really was as hard as it looked, or maybe licking that trail of sweat rolling down the side of his neck. She wondered if he would take offense if she ran her hand over that breathtaking, sculpted ass. She swallowed hard at the thought. When his deep, booming laughter filled the small room, her gut clenched. Oh shit! Did she just say that out loud? No, she was sure she hadn’t. Oh, someone please shoot me dead right now. She closed her eyes and prayed to hear gunfire.
“You move an inch and this thing is going in. Nod if you understand me.”
Cato gave a brief dip of his head and tried to suppress a smile. My mate’s a badass! Her breath would blow hot on the back of his neck, disappear, and then return. She was using him as a shield while assuring no one snuck up behind her. Smart. He glanced down and saw she had a ferocious grip on his Stanley Philips-head screwdriver and the tip was definitely lined up on his jugular. He suddenly remembered flinging her weapon of choice on top of the dresser last week after he fixed the wall socket. He made a mental note to start putting his tools away.
She wasn’t clueless either. Her other hand was clamped in his hair and he wasn’t going anywhere. Gods! If his dick got excited by all of this, he’d gladly stab himself and save her the trouble. It wasn’t helping that her intoxicating scent was playing havoc on his willpower. He couldn’t help the shiver when her husky words slid across his ear.
“Is there anyone else here besides you?”
“Who are you, and where am I?”
“Cato Telarius and you’re in my home. Austin, Texas. Just on the edge of the city.” He heard a sharp intake of breath as the screwdriver drifted down his neck then immediately back into position.
“Do I know you?”
“What does that mean?”
“I know you, but we’ve never met. Formally that is. Your name is Luna.”
“How do you know me?”
“Do you remember being attacked at the phone booth?”
He couldn’t help the tingles working up his spine when she tightened the grip on his hair and the screwdriver tip dented his skin. Her husky voice deepened even further and she hissed out the next question.
“What kind of game are you playing? Of course, I remember the attack. Did you have something to do with that? What the hell is going on?”
Okay, this is getting serious. “Calm down, sweetness. I’ll explain everything.”
She yanked his head back and he stared at the ceiling in quiet wonder. Shit, she thinks I kidnapped her.
“I’m not your sweetness, and I’m getting god damn tired of men telling me to calm down. I’m scared shitless and have a weapon at your throat. You better be glad I’m not on my period, too. I would’ve just stabbed you and started looking for some chocolate. Unless you start explaining, the only way I’m going to calm down is if you’re the one bleeding and I’m twenty miles the fuck away from here.”
Ah hell! I am so in love with this woman.
Tana knew she should have kept her eyes above his chin, but never in her thirty-two years had she ever seen such a striking figure. One look from those thickly lashed, emerald-colored eyes and she’d felt an instant pull that begged her to lift herself from the mattress and reach out to him. Disturbed at the unfamiliar emotion, Tana willed herself to remain planted on the bunk. Her breath caught when he moved out of the shadows and closer to the bars. With a gorgeous mane of jet-black hair falling past his broad shoulders and framing a strong, excruciatingly handsome face, she wondered if he was even real. Was he an apparition? Tana tore her eyes away from his before she started whimpering. His upper body was bare except for a silver necklace dangling between his massive pecs. Her gaze refused to stop its descent. She drank in the sight of his tapered waist, spectacular abdominal muscles, and thick thighs encased in formfitting black pants. He was magnificent.
In stunned surprise, she watched a prominent bulge expanding beneath his trousers. Holy Mother of God! He had more than enough thickness and length to make a woman pass out just from the expectation. When her pussy throbbed, and reminded her that it hadn’t seen any action in almost a year, she instantly looked up and asked him what she doubted was true. “Are you human?” He was too beautiful to be human. The slow lift to his sculpted lips revealed white, even teeth, and a compelling dimple in his right cheek. A shiver slipped up her spine at the deep, heavily accented voice that responded in her native language.
He’d instantly snagged her curiosity. The same curiosity that’d gotten her in this mess in the first place, she figured.
“Either you are, or you’re not. Which one is it?”
“Both. I’m Insedi. Half-human and pure energy.”
Snorting, Tana leaned forward. “You know? A month ago…well, that’s how long I’ve been awake anyway…I would’ve laughed and called you crazy. But after being snatched up by a bunch of blue assholes, it doesn’t sound so farfetched. So, how can you only be half-human, and where did you learn English? Have you been to Earth?”
“You ask a lot of questions.”
Tana shrugged, lifted her palms, and looked around the cell. “Well, it’s not like I have anything better to do.” There was that dimple again. Fascinated, she watched his eyes search her face.
